Crimson Bolt is the alter ego of Frank Darbo, the protagonist in the 2010 dark comedy superhero film Super, written and directed by James Gunn.
Prior to becoming Crimson Bolt, Frank is a deeply troubled short-order cook. He struggles with feelings of inadequacy and loneliness, clinging to his marriage with Sarah, a recovering addict. After Sarah leaves him for Jacques, a charismatic drug dealer, Frank is consumed by grief and anger.
Driven by a vision he believes is from God, Frank decides to become a superhero. With no superpowers, he fashions a crude Crimson Bolt costume and arms himself with a wrench. He then embarks on a violent crusade against crime, or rather, his somewhat twisted perception of it, targeting drug dealers, line cutters, and other perceived wrongdoers.
Crimson Bolt is characterized by his brutal methods, fueled by rage and a desire for justice. His efforts are often misguided and result in considerable collateral damage. He is joined by Libby, a comic book store employee who becomes his sidekick, Boltie, further complicating his already chaotic attempts at heroism.
